Farewell, Herman

These are the last two pictures I took of Herman, napping with Oja and enjoying a sun puddle.  I was going to post a few days ago, and took pictures of Oja and Spyro, but when I tried to take a picture of Herman, the camera informed me that the battery was dead.  I tried charging the battery, but it didn't work.  I could have done it wrong.

Herman ran off to the Rainbow Bridge early this morning.  I don't think he suffered at all.  Yesterday at breakfast he was his normal self and later that morning he was up on his platform, enjoying a nice sun puddle when I gave him his Interferon and his treat.  When he didn't come into the kitchen for lunch at 1:00, I went looking for him and found him in Oja's room, in Emma's hideyhole.  I put his lunch down in the usual spot and told him that if he didn't come out and eat it soon, Spyro would get it.  He didn't seem interested, so I sat   down and petted his head the way he liked for a little bit.  I told myself that I needed to get him to the vet as soon as I could.  Unfortunately, the vet closes at noon on Saturdays.  It was the same at suppertime.  I petted him some more and then went to bed because I was very tired.  I called out, "Herman, bedtime!"  like I always do, but he didn't come.  In fact, no kitties came to bed with me last night.  I spent a restless night, but there was nothing I could do.  Spyro and Oja showed up together to get into bed with me about dawn, which is about when I suspect Herman ran off to the Bridge.  Were they staying with him to comfort him?  I like to think so.  When it was light enough for me to see, I got up to get the kitties breakfast.  Spyro and Oja ran in and started eating, but no Herman.  Herman never misses breakfast.  I went to where I had seen him last and he was lying on his side, his favorite sleeping position.  It wasn't until I touched him that I realized that he had already left.

Was there anything I could have done?  I don't think so.  When Herman stated growling at Spyro when Spyro wanted to play, the first thing that crossed my mind was that maybe Herman wasn't feeling so good, so I started keeping a close eye on him.  When Herman got sick two years ago the first symptom was diarrhea.  Herman didn't have diarrhea.  I cleaned normal poop our of his litter box yesterday.  After I buried him in the garden, I checked where he had been lying to see if there was any mess I needed to clean up.  All I found was one perfectly formed little ball of poop.  When Herman wasn't feeling good, the first sign was that he started letting his tail droop.  He was holding his tail high yesterday morning.  Before when he was sick, he stayed on the floor and wouldn't jump up on anything. and stopped coming to bed for his cuddles.  He was up on his platform yesterday morning and cuddled with me Friday night.  The last time, he went off his food and lost weight at an alarming rate.  He needed more metronidazole Tuesday and I took him with me to weigh him and he had actually gained two tenths of a pound.  As I posted when Herman first got grumpy with Spyro, I thought Spyro had hurt him a little rasslin'.  I did find what felt like two tiny scabs on the back of Herman's neck.  I made sure I felt his neck every day for signs of soreness or swelling until the scabs disappeared, so Herman didn't have an abscess or any type of infection.

I was so happy when Herman reached his fifth birthday, thinking he was out of the danger zone.  If he had only had feline leukemia, he might well have been, but he had FIV, too, so maybe they both ganged up on him at once and carried him off.  I don't know.  I'm just glad he didn't suffer.  It looked like he just went to sleep and woke up at the Rainbow Bridge.  It is just five days until his third Gotcha Day.  Maybe Emma was there at the Bridge to greet him and maybe not.  They never did really like each other.  He has plenty of other friends there to greet him.  I am going to miss him terribly.  I think what I will miss most is calling out, "Herman, bedtime!" every night and having him join me for a long petting session and cuddle.  Oja is more that willing to take over that duty.  Sometimes she would beat Herman there and the both of them would cuddle up with me and each other.  I had one hand to pet each.  Spyro and Herman made up recently.  I saw them nose kissing only a few days ago. Spyro just stopped trying to get Herman to play and all was well.  They would eat out of the same dish together.

I will leave the present blog header up through Herman's Gotcha Day, then I will change the title to something else.  I am thinking of using Spyro's name and something alliterative, but nothing good is coming to mind, but my mind isn't exactly clear right now.  The tears haven't started yet, but I think I am still in shock.  I will write Herman a farewell limerick, when one comes to me.  See you at the Rainbow Bridge, Herman, my handsome boy.

I'm so sorry. So very, very sorry. I bet that Oja and Spyro did stay close to Herman that last night, to let him know how much he was loved and to comfort him. My peep has told me before that when my aunties' mama got sick, my Auntie Primrose stayed close by her side the entire time. She knew. She didn't want her Mama Alicia to be alone. We cats know so much more than many give us credit for knowing. Herman was in good paws in his final hours, that's for sure. Now, he's up in Heaven and will be totally free from all illness. purrs

Karen Jo, we are sending you our virtual hugs and purrs on the passing of Herman. It is never easy to lose a pet, and it was clear what a great love there was between the two of you. If there is any consolation, it is that it seems he died peacefully, and quietly, and without having to be taken to the vet for help. We are sure he is now feeling healthy and frisky at the Raibow Bridge.

Karen Jo, we are so saddened by this news! Herman was truly special and we were afraid you might not be together long. Almost 3 years... the best of his life, we're sure. Spyro and Oja have a big space to fill. We're happy Herman didn't suffer, but it's hard when they go suddenly, with so little warning. That's how it was with Bonnie - she seemed a little off and was in organ failure before the vet opened the next morning. Sometimes that's better than suffering through a treatment ordeal, but no matter how they go, it's always hard on us. Our hearts and purrs are with you! ~ Victor, Nina, and Tabbymom Jen

Oh Karen, I just found Ann Adamus' email and rushed over. I am shocked! I loved Herman! I had no idea he had both FIV and Leukemia, what a brave soul and how wonderful you found him 3 years ago and he had you to love him and give him such a good life to its end. I always enjoy reading about how Herman, Spyro and Oja are doing. Before we found Savannah, last December, we had gone through the loss of our 3 senior cats, all 17ish, in less than 10 months. We were shell shocked and vowed no more cats, we were too old (66 and 69) then we met Savannah about 2 months after our last baby went to the Bridge. So I know our three, Tasha, Boris and Popcorn are already with Herman having some fun. My deepest sympathy, Linda and Savannah

I would think that the other kitties stayed with Herman until he passed to the Rainbow Bridge. I think he would have shown signs of pain or discomfort if he had them. I doubt the vet could have done anything if there were few signs of anything wrong. It was just Herman's time to go. I expect you feel there must have been something you could do, but there probably was nothing that could be done.
He can join up with Diamond at the bridge. They will have nice times playing together.

You did all you could to love and take care of sweet Herman. I am so glad that you two found each other and had time together. I know you will miss him bunches. Thinking of you and sending love your way. Keep Herman close to you in your thoughts and in your heart. Someday you will meet again. I too will meet him.

Karen, I'm just getting back from a short trip and hadn't heard until today as I worked through my backlog of emails.
You are right...I think he just went to sleep and woke up at the Bridge. What a lovely life you gave him, and such warm memories of him. I know the heartbreak and emptyness because of Scooby 7 months ago (has it been that long? Seems like yesterday). Please be comforted by the knowledge of the love you gave him and he gave you in return. He was A Very Good Cat.

Karen Jo I am so so sorry to hear about Herman. He was such a sweet and handsom ManCat. My tears are falling for him even though he passed peacefully. I am glad to hear that he didn't suffer much. My prayers are for you Karen Jo. As far as tears go I shed more tears later for Casper than I did when he first passed. I miss him. They will come. It's so great that he did have a great forever home with you. God Bless.

I am so sorry about Herman. He wasn't in this world for very long but he clearly made an impression on your heart - the special ones do that.

It sounds to me as though you did everything you reasonably could and it was just his time to leave. I'm glad to hear he didn't suffer.

You are in my thoughts and heart. Sending Comforting purrrrrrrrrrrrrrs.

We are sending the gentlest purrs to you. By the way you describe it Herman had the gentlest death possible. That is such a relief - to know that he didn't suffer and just went in his sleep. It is hard to cope with though, because it comes so unexpectantly. Our sincere condolences.

We are so sorry and sad to read this news about Herman's passing. He was a super mancat and so lucky that you gave him such a wonderful home. We all had a soft spot for Herman as we know that FIV+ & FeLv cats have a rough time in getting good homes. We think his passing must have been peaceful and he is now having a wonderful time at The Bridge with many friends who have gone before.

We send you love and rumbly purrs and a thank you for being a champion for Herman and cats with FIV & FeLV,

Gerry, Mungo & The Ape xx

Our mommy was out of town and we just read about Herman running off to the Bridge. We wanted all of you to know we are thinking of you and remembering Herman. Mommy says that this was the way her first kitty ran off and it still saddens her to think that she might have missed something back then.
We lost our FIV brother two years ago.
Sending snuggles and purrs to help ease the pain.
