Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet-Week

See this happy cat with his paw on a toy mouse?  About 15 months ago, Herman was brought into my local animal shelter and was diagnosed with both FIV and FeLV.  He was deemed unadoptable and recommended for euthanasia.  Luckily the Friends of the Shelter took him into foster care.  Otherwise he would never have lived to his second birthday.  I found him six months later and now he is three years old and happily living the life of the pampered King of the House.  Not all cats are as lucky as Herman.  Many cats stay in shelters for months and even years because they are older, have black fur or are special needs.  If you are planning on adopting a cat or dog, please consider adopting one of these special ones.  I am very glad that I did.

Karen Jo, I am so happy that you and Herman "found" each other because your heart was in the right place to help out a less adoptable kitty.

We are glad you took Herman home and gave him lots of love and care.
We came from a house with over 100 cats and were rescued by the local RSPCA and given shots and health care and hooharectomies or snips.
Our mum came in and adopted us both - we know we have been lucky.

Herman, you make us purr, because you prove to the world that kitties considered "less adoptable" are just amazing and wonderful family members. Our FIV+ mancat Jonathan was just about the best cat EVER...and he had long black fur and a heart of gold.

Big purrs to you and your mom.

Taz is one of the cats we are talking about. His previous mistress had died and the daughter could not or would not take Miss Taz home with her, so she sat at the shelter for a long time. Problem with Taz is that she had been an only and to suddenly find herself in a cage, surrounded by other cats, scared her. When mommy went to see about getting a new kitty from the shelter(one of her's had died) she had her eye on a little young boy kitty but after talking to one of the staff and sleeping on it, she went and got him on Christmas Eve. They had to put on leather gloves to get her in the carrier, she was so upset and scared.
Taz lived in the spare room for a long time and learned to trust mommy. Still, sometimes, she'll hiss and slap out with her claws but most the time, she's mommy's princess and she gets along fine with the boys.
We are all happy that Herman found a good home and that he had good people looking out for him.

Truly, Herman's magnificence had to be preserved. There are some smart people in the world, and they saw that...!

Thank you for the story. I treasure Hermans blog. It survives every cull I inflict on my RSS feed when I feel overwhelmed. I love hearing how this wonderful boy is doing, and what a wonderful life he has.

Thanks to everyone for the other stories shared here too and the comments, I have been reading them and appreciate them very much.

Herman, we wish every cat was as lucky as you being adopted by a wonderful loving human. We think all the so called less adoptable cats are actually the most adoptable to us.

You are a wonderful and handsome advocate for adoption!

Herman, we think you should be the poster child for this cause. Although we didn't have a blog back then, we followed your story from the day Karen Jo first saw your flier. We admired her for thinking about taking on such a large and scary responsibility after the time she had just been through, and we were so worried about you when you were not doing well. It just makes us purr and purr to know how well you are doing now.
