Storm

We are having a really big snowstorm. Mom took both a still picture and a few seconds of video of what was going on at our house about noon today. She thinks that the still came out better.

I sat on my platform and watched it come down. I even watched my Mom go out in this and fill up the bird feeder. I think she's a bit nuts, but the birds put on a good show after they got fed. I didn't even want to play I was so engrossed. I finally told her that I wanted to play this afternoon when she was getting her coat to go to work. I missed out on my afternoon play time and I was unhappy about that, but this was just so much more interesting.

Karen Jo: It's still coming down. I got some snow in my boots coming home from work and the top of my boot is 8 1/2 inches high. I was going to snap a picture of what the same scene looked like when I got home, but I would have had to take off and put on my boots again and I was just too tired. I will show you another picture tomorrow.

I didn't even want to play with my Mom when she got home. She was really surprised. Once she feeds me and gets into her PJs we usually play like mad for a half hour or so. She took a picture with the flash of me just lying there looking at her, but the camera was pointed at the lamp as well as me and you can't even see me. I finally decided I wanted to play about an hour later.

Karen Jo: I need some suggestions on how to play with Herman. We just do the same old things day after day and I am afraid I am beginning to bore him. We play bat the ball back and forth and I toss him rattle mousies or other toys. I bounce his balls for him and sometimes he just ignores them. Da Bird scares him and I haven't found a smaller lure for it yet. He likes to play with my hand, but he uses his claws frequently and it hurts. He likes the laser dot, but gets frustrated with it. I give him a treat when he bites at it, but he still walks away from it after a while.

I think that Herman is already doing great with his playing and I bet he isn't bored!

Perhaps Herman would just prefer to snuggle instead of play. Or perhaps have his hair combed. I know at my home if I get out the furminator a line forms to get their hair brushed. Mine do like their nip but it doesn't require much effort on my part, except pick up the soggy toys before the dog eats them.

After playing with Herman, put his toys away. Only leave a couple out for him to play with. That way, it seems new each time you bring out a toy. We all luf to play catch a shoelace, or string. Just get something long enough to pull along behind you, and he will chase it all over the house. Of course, you need a little bit of energy to keep going for a long time! And always put toys away like the shoelace so that he can't chew it up and swallow it. That requires emergency surgeries!

We're all different here. Ellie and Allie will play any time...Sniffie and Tamir not so much.

I have a cat teaser I like a lot. It's a long string of fleece at the end of a wand. Mom flicks it around, and I chase it. I like to do this every day. After I run around a lot, I get tired and go lie down. I am sure Herman loves playing. It's a routine. I want play time every night before bed, and make sure to get it.

Herman, you get lots of playtime, don't you?! We never get that much playtime, but Gandalf and especially Whitey like to bat their mousies around. And growl at them. And meow really, really loud. It is a little bit annoying.

What about some treat toys? Like stuff he can bat around and throw around and when it does it lets loose a couple of treats

We had some of the snow too and today are under a winter advisory, whatever that means. It is good that your mom is feeding the little birdies because they find it hard to find the food in the snow. Don't worry she will find time to still feed you. Stay warm.

Herman, would you believe we've never seen snow????? Except maybe once in a while an occasional.....very occasional......flurry in the air??? Mom said they had 13 inches here in 1985, but that was long before either of us....and to date it was the last measurable snowfall.

Ma wanted us to stop by and say thank you for making her 90th so very special....and of course we thank you also. xxxxxxxxxx

We recommend the Cat Dancer!!! And it only costs about 3 or 4 green papers!

Sounds like you play with him just right. I walk away from the red dot after a while, too...but I still have fun with it.

We have DaBird, too...Buddah loves to jump at it, but what I like is when the Woman drags it across the floor. Maybe your Mom could try that?

I saw Daisy recommended a Cat Dancer. Those are AWESOME!

But when it comes down to it, we're cats...we play on our terms and people don't always get that. It's not boredom...it's felinedom. We gotta get those 19 hours of sleep in sometime... ;)

the cats here love the whip, but a couple shoelaces tied together should suffice. Get some of those ultra-thick winter gloves to play with him with - but that might scare him, so start with something smaller if it does. go with simple things... and with the laser, sometimes you got to let him snatch it, otherwise he just gives up because he don't think he can ever get it.

We like the feather wand! We could play with that thing for hours! Ahhhh, our has feathers AND jingle bells - I think our Mom got it at petco, we think...

We're new to the kitty blogging scene & thought we'd stop & say hello! Hope to see you around!

I am not sure about Herman, but Mushka and I are just happy for Momma to pay attentions to us, when we feel like it of course.
We are good at entertaining ourselves also, when momma does not feel like it...do not worry about Hermy getting bored, I am sure he is just happy to be loved, fed and have a forever home and forever wonderful momma :))

thankyou for my birday Wishies :))

Thank you so much for the award!!!!
Yes we Mancats need to stick together ;)
Mom says we will be getting another storm Wednesday night! The snow we got Sunday was only a 'dusting'
I'm glad I do not have to go out in it like Mom does, heehee

We take playing in spurts. But any time Mom gets a wand toy out we are ready. We have one that has a KONG on it but the feather ones are best!

We agree that Herman is probably very happy just getting attention and spending time with you. We get bored with our toys very quickly too. We will usually play if mom flings around a feather wand for us to chase. Ambrose also loves to play with a Turbo Scratcher/Star Chaser. He and mom will take turns rolling the ball toward each other in the circular track. My absolute favorite game is when mom drags a feather boa wand around my carpeted scratching post and I attack the feathers. The best part is that I attack and bunnykick the scratching post too as I attack the fevvers.

Like some others here, we usually don't play for more than a few minutes at a time, so we wouldn't worry a lot about 'play time' and him getting bored; we don't think it's really in our nature to play for long periods of time. Sometimes we'll play with a toy one day, totally ignore it the next, and you can't tear us away 2 days later. Just depends on what we feel like doing, no rhyme or reason! ;)

We're sure he'll be fine with whatever playing he does.

We agree with the kitties at The Kitty Krew. We rarely play for more than a few minutes at a time. We're sure that Herman is loving his new home and he's not bored!

One suggestion though, is a kitty soccer ball in the bathtub. Deli goes wild with that and amuses herself for a long time.

Hi Herman,

Thanks for visiting my bloggy. Looks like our people adopted us around the same time. I am still training the lady and man.

My people are learning about cat toys. I like the laser the best. I am still learning about Da Bird... or rather the lady is. She finally learned that she could swing Da Bird really high and she seems to enjoy it quite a bit. I also like playing with ribbon. As soon as it disappears around the corner, I am after it!

Hey Herman!
Thanks so much for coming to look at my new blog! I am glad you got a good home like I did!
You sound really lucky!
Find a nice warm air blowy spot and keep warm! It's a snow storm here too, perfect excuse to lay on my Mommy!
I love to play with soft mousies, and also my "tail" toy, a long furry peice of fabric on a stick that I drag around everywhere and take up on Mommy's bed for her to throw for me! I also love the laser pointer, and playing chase with Mommy! It sounds like your mommy is already doing a great job of playing with you!

I think your mom is just worrying a little too much. Us cats are independent and often find our own fun. We just like to know that someone is around and loves us.

I think the earlier comment about putting some toys away makes alot of sense. I have a few that are out all the time and then there's some other special occasion toys that Glogirly has to play with me.

Ooh, ooh, we got some advice! Change the toys each day. I was gettin bored with all the toys bein out alla time. So The Big Thing seperated them by kind in bowls we couldn't get at. One day, he brings out the rattly mousies. Then the next, the Squiggles Then I get foam balls. Next day, I get rattly balls, then soft shrews, then dangly string things another day etc. And there might be wand toy time anytime!

I nefer know what ta espect. That helps keep it innerested...

Oh, an he wear leather garden gloves somes so we can play wif his hands all rough an clawly-kicky!

An we gotta say that cause there are 2 of us near the same age, we lay alot together ourselfs. That is cool too.

But mostly. keep our toys out of reach an offer us specific ones each fay so we don't see them all day an night. That gets a bit boring.

Hi Herman and Mommy Karen Jo! It sounds like you are having lots of fun Herman! Mommy is doing a great job. :) Toeshee likes to play fetch with Nerf foam darts. It's just something he learned while playing with his Daddyman. Sometimes he will fetch little mousies too. I think Herman is getting lots of funtime in, but maybe just switching up the toys will be fine. The catdancer is fun, but Cricket broke ours.
It is very cold and snowy here too. Mr. Cody and I miss our garden time.
Stay warm and snuggly okay?
I would like to send you a Christmas card. If it's okay.
My e-mail is lfeecat@jasnetworks if you want to let me know. :)

I don't blame you for getting frustrated with the laser light. As far as I know no one has ever caught it. Mom wanted her snow so bad but she didn't get it. It went down to Southern Calif. instead. The storm that came in today is to warm for snow so it's just raining which we need really bad. Tomorrow another storm is suppose to come through and rain harder than this time. Personally I think your Mom is doing a good job playing with you. It's just sometimes you don't want to play when she does. Sometimes it's not easy getting on the same play tract.

We LOVE the paper grocery bags. Mom cuts windows into the sides and dares us to catch her fingers as she sticks them in. She's taught us since kittenhood the words, "no claws". She just stops playing for a good bit if one of us trys to claw her. It's best to take off any handles ahead of time.

Now for maybe Christmouse AND your birthday AND your gotchha day, Herman may ask for a Fling-ama- String by Moody Pet. Oh, it's the best. Right when you think you've caught the string, bam it hides itself out of sight. The bad part is it uses up our Mom's green papers because it's battery operated and we would play with it like forever. We're a house of 4 kitties though and we take turns. We do get tired and that's the clue for the next cat to take over.

Hi Herman, we have just caught up on your week. Having one pink paw pad is very special you know. Glad your Mom is over her cold and sorry about the big scary boots, your Mom will learn to dance around you eventually I expect :)

If you are fed up with the laser, ask your Mum to give you a kibble treat (throw it so it lands where the light is) after every few minutes of play. The laser is a great toy but it's very frustrating for we cats as there is nothing for us to catch, the treat keeps us happy and interested.

A big kicky toy ( a larger soft toy) is good for cats who like to use claws on human hands - something about the size of hands works well and stops us using human hands for da important bitey and scratchy action that we love. In general it's best to keep human hands out of the play equation our Mum says. We have a ragged old furry snake for bitey play and we love it.

A long piece of sisal rope with knots along it is a good chase and grapple toy too - cheap too.

That snow looks cold, we're so glad you are in such a loving and warm home now Herman.

I like to chase bits of ribbon, but what will always get me playing is if mum uses a pen under the bedspread, and I pounce and jump on it.

I can though spend hours just looking out the window. Having a seat or somewhere I can sit and look outside, is hours of fun.

I do not play very much but I do not get bored. When I feel like playing I find Sushi or one of my toys and play. Sometimes I ask Mom or my Daddy to play with me but usually I only play for a couple of minutes. I do not think you need to worry Karen Jo.

prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs and head bumps,
Tiger Lily

Tiger Lily is right Karen Jo. Kittehs are very good at doing what they want to do. We cannot get her to play with us unless she starts it herself. Mom and my Daddy do not even buy very many new toys for her 'cuz she is happy with a feather or a wadded up piece of paper.
